Ghanan Kente Cloth Painted Paper Weavings
It was down to the wire but we got both paintings on paper ready to weave together and got them done on the last day of classes for these 1st graders. The paper weavings were so very colorful. And it was great fun to look at their two creations combined together in one.
Finished with the Wemawe/Totems!
3rd Graders finished their Wemawe/Totems, their pouches and many of them got in a mini book about how they met their Wemawe or Totem. They did such a great job!
Color on the Assemblage Wood Sculptures
2nd Grade Artists painted their Abstract Assemblage Wood Sculptures. Always fun to see color!! I see a cat in there.
Overlapping with Kinder
One of my favorite drawing exercises for the younger crowd is to practice overlapping. It can be uncomfortable for kids to do it but it immediately starts to give them a different sense of space rather than placing subjects they are drawing right next to each other. Here is a table of kinders who really challenged themselves to overlap!

Abstract Assemblage Wood Sculptures
2nd graders are squeezing in one more project before the end of the school year. They were challenged to make a sculpture with just 3-5 pieces of wood and arrange the pieces in an interesting way to them. It's been fun hearing the explanations of their creations. They will be painting them next.
Printmaking with Shape and Letter Stamps
Kinders at Madison Heights have been experimenting with printmaking using shape stamps and tempera paint in primary colors.
Coil Pots
Kinders at Simis made coil pots out of model magic. They first played with the model magic and made whatever they wanted from it. They next time they came in they learned how to make a coil pot, a very traditional way of making containers out of clay. They colored the pieces of clay with marker. Here are a few of their creations.
First Grade Paper Weavings inspired by Ghanan Kente Cloth
They are making two pieces of painted paper and weaving them together. Here is their symbol paper. Each strip has a symbol repeated to create a pattern that holds personal meaning to the artist.
Wemawe/Totems with Pouches
Here are the 3rd Graders finished Wemawe/Totem sculptures with their carrying pouches. They had to create a silhouette of their animal as a design on their pouch.
Pop Art Paper Mache Donuts
4th graders are finishing up their Pop Art Paper Mache Donuts. They had two objectives when creating the form: Larger than life size and accurate proportions of donuts. Here is the first one finished!

1st Grade Rhinos
Most 1st grades at Heights created Iguana Texture drawings but one had already started an iguana drawing in pencil. When it came to make the drawings in sharpie I gave them a choice: they could draw their iguanas from photos I provided, adding texture, or they could follow me for a bit on a rhino texture drawing. Since I showed some of other 1st graders Iguana drawings here are some of the Rhinos.
2nd Grade Marker Beetle Styrofoam Prints
2nd Graders are making beetle drawings on styrofoam and printing them. To get ready for that they also made beetle drawings using markers first. Here are their first drawings and some prints that they have made from their drawings on styrofoam.
