For their first project my students at both Heights and Simis made monochrome self portraits. We talked about head proportion, and what it means to make something monochrome (one color). The artists practiced drawing patterns and lines and then observed their own features using a mirror while drawing the portrait. We also talked about the difference between a portrait (an image of a person) and a self-portrait (an image of the artist made by the artist). Each table received a different color and they were requested to use markers, crayons AND colored pencils in their self portrait therefore making it a multimedia work. Each school will have a mural created from the self portraits that will move from purple to blue to green to yellow to orange and finally to red making a rainbow mural of monochrome self portraits.
Here is the completed mural of the Simis Kindergarteners. When the Heights mural is built and hanging I will share pictures of that one. So excited!!
