Dancing Calaveras!!!

3rd Grade students are creating a composition with at least 5 dancing calaveras in different positions.  They created little pipe cleaner guys and then traced them and turned them into skeletons.  This meant the tracing was somewhat difficult because they couldn't necessarily trace around them but instead had to turn them into stick figure type skeletons.  And that was a challenge that they took up.  We studied and mashed up the styles of Keith Haring, a New York City grafitti artist, who created his own characters as symbols of people and Jose Posada, a Mexican printmaker, who used calaveras as symbols of people.  It was inspired by a combination of Carson Bilgers Keith Haring projects, where he used wire guys to trace and a project about Dancing Calaveras I saw on Artsonia.
